SUMMARY

Semiconductor nanoparticles have unique optical and electrical properties due to their large surface to volume ratio. In order to preserve their properties, it is important to coat their surface with a protective material, such as silicon dioxide (silica). In general, coating of nanoparticles is done in batch-wise techniques which are laborious and last for a couple of hours. On the other hand, it is not possible to obtain uniform coating thicknesses in these methods due to lack of control over reaction conditions. Microfluidic systems, on the other hand, addresses these issues by providing a highly controllable environment in terms of concentration of reagents, residence time, temperature, pH, etc. Therefore they are promising for achieving monodisperse coating. This project aims to design a microfluidic reactor that is designed for the purpose of coating CdSe nanoparticles with silica layer.
